The Sriracha craze has been in full-swing for a while now. For whatever reason, the sauce that was once reserved for Chinese buffets is now nearly as ubiquitous as ketchup and salsa. Sriracha merchandise is everywhere, and I’ve even seen key-ring bottles for those of us who always need to carry some sauce with us. It’s no surprise, then, that Taco Bell, a chain that gave up on even trying to resemble Mexican food quite some time ago, has hopped on the bandwagon. This addition to their menu takes the already unholy Quesarito (a burrito wrapped in another tortilla with a layer of cheese sauce in between) and adds the restaurant’s creamy sriracha sauce. Makes sense.

The Taco Bell website doesn’t seem to have this item listed for some reason (even though it has the newer chicken lineup), so I had to use the ingredients list from the regular Quesarito. The only real difference is that the Sriracha Quesarito uses, you guessed it, Sriracha in place of the original’s chipotle sauce.
I’ll be the first to admit that the above picture doesn’t actually look all that appetizing. You can see the official presentation to the right, but these things never turn out exactly like the promotional images. In particular, my Quesarito had its heap of sour cream all in one place, as though whoever slapped it together did not care about five-star presentation.
Smell and Taste:
Have you ever smelled Taco Bell? I love the place, but everything there kind of smells the same. It’s this meat-and-cheese smell mainly, with hints of herbs and spices. That’s what happens when your menu mostly consists of the same ingredients used in different ways and combinations over and over. If it sounds like I’m complaining, I’m not. It’s a great smell, one that I’m sure is even better if you’re intoxicated in some way. And other than that big fat blob of sour cream at one end, the flavor is bold and consistent throughout.
So far, I have yet to taste anything spicy from Taco Bell, and this product is no exception. The Sriracha Quesarito, while delicious, doesn’t light up my mouth the way that coating my food in Huy Fong sauce does. This seems to be another product in the fast-food trend of so-called “spicy” items that cater to the growing chilehead population, and let spicy food newcomers feel like they have accomplished something. But hey, like I said, this thing is delicious. The Mild heat is at least complemented by a great blend of seasoned beef, cheese, and rice, all of which work very well together. I’m not convinced this thing even needs sour cream, seeing as how two thirds of my Quesarito had no sour cream anyway. The heat may be missing, but this is definitely one of my new go-to favorites at Taco Bell, and it gets a Notable from me.
Let’s be honest: this is Taco Bell we’re talking about here. You don’t go to the Bell expecting something that’s going to rock your world and redefine the sensation of taste for you. What you get is a reasonably-priced faux-Mexican burrito that manages to be really tasty in its own right. If the ground beef isn’t your thing, you can also get this one with shredded chicken or steak, both of which work just as well with the item as a whole.
