Hey there, loyal readers! Today’s Fiery Friday feature is a mustard-based product from the folks at Horsetooth Hot Sauce. We’ve all had spicy mustard, but this is a habanero mustard sauce. What’s the difference? Well, this one comes in a hot sauce bottle. I’m sure there’s more to it than that, though, so let’s check it out.
Distilled White Vinegar, Apple Cider Vinegar, Habaneros, Mustard Flour, Salt, Garlic, Onion, Black Pepper, Turmeric, Xantham Gum, Spices
Yeah, this stuff is definitely set up more like a hot sauce than a mustard. You’ve got your vinegar and peppers there at the top, which is pretty much all you need for a standard sauce. Of course, Horsetooth throws the mustard in there as well, which definitely changes the game a bit.
Habanero sauces are typically bold orange, and mustard is usually yellow. General Mustard is somewhere in the middle, though somehow paler than both of its relatives. Were I to judge based solely on appearance, I might wind up passing this one over.
Smell and Taste:
Looks aren’t everything, of course, and any product deserves a fair trial. Fortunately, General Mustard smells fantastic. It is pure habanero wafting out of that bottleneck, with only the faintest hint of mustard and vinegar. I love it. The flavor is also much more pepper-focused than I expected. Here, the mustard works as a flavor enhancer rather than being the main event.
General Mustard hits hard and fast. With habaneros, there’s no creeping heat that just suddenly hits you, and this sauce is perfectly representative of that. This one is an easy Mean. And man, it is tasty. The balance between habanero and mustard flavors makes for an interesting sauce that is a different experience than a mere spicy mustard. I’m impressed, and I’m giving it a Notable.
At the end of the day, this is still basically a mustard, even if the focus is more on the peppers. As such, you’ll want to use it on food that would work well with normal mustard. You hot dog purists might appreciate this one, and burgers and chicken are obvious choices. I would also love to slather this over a rack of ribs. Heck, even a basic ham and cheese sandwich could go for some General Mustard.
