Tonight’s Fiery Friday is going to be a bit sweeter than normal, as my subject is a set of chocolate-covered caramels. Don’t worry, we haven’t suddenly become “EAT MORE SWEETS.” These lovely little confections are laced with some of the hottest peppers on the planet, meaning they are surely not to be trifled with. This six-pack of chocolate caramels from Madison Chocolatiers comes with two pieces each of dark, milk, and white chocolate, so there’s something there no matter what your chocolate preference is.
Butter, Dark, Milk, and White Chocolate, Brown Sugar, Sweetened Condensed Milk, Corn Syrup, Scorpion and Moruga Pepper, Vanilla, Salt
So, these are chocolates, and they have caramel in them. They also contain spicy death. That’s really all you need to know.
I want to get this out of the way: I feel totally deceived by the packaging. The chocolates come in black, gold, and red wrappers, so I figured that those would be dark, white, and milk chocolates, respectively. Nope. I was completely wrong. For reference, the black wrapper contains the white chocolate, the gold wrapper holds the milk chocolate, and the red wrapper houses the dark chocolate. Anyway, wrapper confusion aside, each of the caramel pieces looks precisely as you would expect, with no hint of a high-Scoville surprise lurking inside.
Smell and Taste:
Similarly, these little things smell like their respective chocolates, with no indication that you’re about to bite into something painful. And that’s dangerous, because the heat hits immediately following the sweet.
So yeah, these things are hot. I tried the dark chocolate caramel first, because I’ve never really been a fan of dark chocolate, and I wanted to get it out of the way. It was actually pretty tasty. My problem, unfortunately, is that a large chunk of my bite decided to go on a kamikaze mission straight down my throat before I could chew it up. That. Really. Hurt. Once I got past that initial burn, though, these things weren’t deathly spicy. They’re hot, as I’ve said, but not truly on the level of scorpion-based hot sauce. That’s probably a good thing. Still, they hit a solid Mean, and rate even higher if you don’t manage to chew before swallowing. The other good news here is that they taste pretty damn good, too. The dark chocolate isn’t too bitter, the milk chocolate is sweet, and the white chocolate has the delicious creaminess that I love. As with other chocolate products, the white is my favorite, but I’m pleased with the other two as well. My only real issue with the candies is the aftertaste, which is most decidedly peppery. The hot pepper flavor lingers long after the chocolate disappears. That’s not enough to drag this product down, though, so I’m giving the overall package a Nice.
With Valentine’s Day coming up next month, these chocolate caramel treats could make an excellent gift for the chileheads in your lives. You can find them at the Maidson Chocolatiers West website.
