According to the Wiki, Fresa, which is Spanish for strawberry, is a slang term often used in Mexico to describe a cultural stereotype of superficial youngsters who many come from a high class and educated family. The word was originally and highly used by teenagers and young adults between the ages of 13 and 20, but nowadays is used by people of all ages (up to their 60’s). Now add Fresa to red peppers and habaneros you get Mama Pearls Fresa Flavored Hot Sauce. Mama Pearl’s Hot Sauce is a manufacturer of specialty gourmet hot sauce. Out of their lineup the idea of picking the one flavored with strawberries here at the end of summer sounds like the perfect choice. So lets see whats beyond the cap!
Red Peppers, Strawberries, Habanero Peppers, Distilled Vinegar, Water, Garlic, Mustard, Modified Food Starch, Salt, Ginger, Sugar
The bottle comes with a nice bright pinkish red color graphic with deep yellow sunburst label. It matches well with the pureed red orange peppers used to make the sauce.
Smell and Taste:
The fragrance of habanero overpowers any suggestion of strawberry and has a mild but expected scent of vinegar. The taste is immediate prominent habanero with a very light sweet aftertaste, followed by the warming heat of the pepper combination. I’m still searching for the strawberry flavor but I know it’s there, as it says so on the label. It is very faint…but done well. May be more of a mean heat to others but I found it still to be a medium and good.
What to Expect:
Expect a nice thick-pouring sauce with lots of body, and crunchy pepper bits that bring on the heat upon contact. No waiting, and the heat seems to elevate after repeated tasting. This sauce has a clean crisp taste…fresa!!!
Mama Pearl’s Hot Sauce is a good gourmet hot sauce worthy of a try, and I am certain it will taste different when paired with certain foods. Just keep in mind that this is not a sweet sauce like I was expecting, since it is touting the Fresa name. For this sauce, strawberry is the vehicle in which the pepper flavor is delivered.
